Do you love Jesus?

Do you love Jesus?

Jesus tells us that ‘if ye love me, keep my commandments.’

This command shows us how we’re to keep God’s commands, not keeping them to earn His approval but as the fruit of our love for Him.

Jesus in the lead up to this has just washed the disciples feet and told them to follow His example of a giving, sacrificial love towards one another.

Both of these commands show us how to keep the command He’d previously given to ‘love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.’

We love God and others by our obedience to God and by spreading His love in our actions.

But there’s more, there’s a promise attached to this command…

‘If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.’

This Comforter, the Spirit of truth lives in each of God’s children, to help us. He is the Spirit of truth and through Him we have all the power we need to keep God’s commands. He will help us if we lean into His fullness.

The old English word Comforter means to strengthen. The Holy Spirit will both strengthen and help us to keep God’s commands and to love Him and others with all our being. He intercedes with our Heavenly Father for us and helps us to understand truth. He also gives us all we need to truly follow Jesus.

So dear soul, ‘if ye love me, keep my commandments.’
