How to Overcome Overwhelm?
How do we overcome overwhelm? I opened my Bible this morning to see this subheading ‘Gideon’s army is too large.’
Gideon, at God’s command was preparing an army to fight against their enemy.
But God told him that ‘The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.’ And so Gideon sent home all the men that were afraid.
‘And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many;’ and so he sent home all but 300 men to fight the battle. ‘
‘And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.’
Only faith could move Gideon and his 300 men forward against this great army and only God could give them the victory.
And He did!
Without faith that army looked overwhelming. It was impossible for them to overcome in their own strength.
Maybe that’s what your day or even your life feels like right now.
Overwhelming, impossible.
But God…
Again and again when the children of Israel looked to God for help in their overwhelm, He brought then safely through.
Gideon couldn’t defeat that great army alone but he could go forward in faith trusting the One who could.
Our I can’ts turn into I cans when we bring God into the equation.
‘I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.’
So keep going dear soul, trusting God to fight for you.
Because His grace truly is sufficient if you go forward not in your own strength but in His.
‘We rest on thee, our Shield and our Defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
strong in thy strength, safe in thy keeping tender,
we rest on thee, and in thy name we go;
Yea, in thy name, O Captain of salvation!
In thy dear name, all other names above:
Jesus our righteousness, our sure foundation,
our Prince of glory and our King of love.
We go in faith, our own great weakness feeling,
and needing more each day thy grace to know:
yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
“We rest on thee, and in thy name we go”.
We rest on thee, our Shield and our Defender!
Thine is the battle, thine shall be the praise;
when passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
victors, we rest with thee, through endless days.’ (Edith G Cherry)
