What is the point of the Genealogies in Chronicles?

October 22, 2025 by saltblog

Parts of the Book of Chronicles can seem, well, let be honest, boring.

Those long lists of names, genealogy after genealogy but God chose to put them in His Word.

After reading through some of those names the other day of the various descendants of the children of Israel, I had this thought.

Each of those people were an important port of God’s plan. Through the lineage, Jesus would be born.

Others played pivotal roles in decisions that were made and battles that were fought.

Each name represents a person who had a part to play in God’s plan. And not just His plan for their generation but generations to follow whose lives would be impacted by the decisions they made.

These were people just like us who lived their lives day by day.  They had their hard things and sometimes they messed up but God was in control of it all, working it all together for His glory and the sanctification of His people.

However insignificant we may feel, we each have an important part to play in God’s plan. The decisions we make in our day to day lives may impact generations.

‘See then that ye walk circumspectly (diligently), not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.’

This can seem like a big responsibility but we can look to and trust God to lead and guide us in His way.

‘Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’

So go forward in faith, being diligent to follow Jesus and His example, trusting God to lead and guide.

With love
