When sin’s burden feels too great,
When its weight your soul drags down,
When you view your sin stained heart
See the filth where’er you turn,
Turn in faith towards the cross,
In repentance lay it there
Gaze upon the love of Christ
Sin no longer thine to bear.
For, upon that cross Christ took,
All your sin upon Himself.
For each sin, God’s wrath He bore,
Took the guilt, it’s thine no more.
Turn your eyes away from self
Lift them to a Saviour kind
Cast imaginations down,
In His Word renew your mind.
Though the battle may be strong
Once in Christ, He dwells in you,
Put the heavenly armour on
By His strength He’ll bring you through.
Therefore stand in readiness
Shod with peace the gospel brings,
And your Saviour’s righteousness,
Protects your heart, your covering.
With God’s truth gird up your loins,
In readiness to fight the foe,
Yes, the battle may be strong,
Yet by His grace He’ll bring you through.
So with faith take up your shield
All the devils’ darts to quench
Captive take those rebel thoughts,
To obey your Saviour, Christ.
Let salvation guard your thoughts,
Like a helmet for your mind,
For the enemy we’re taught
Would to self your thoughts confine,
Seeks to keep your mind on self
Rather than the Saviour true,
So with Christ your thoughts engulf
In His love your thoughts renew.
Firmly grasp the Spirit’s sword,
Daily hide it in your mind,
For it is the word of God,
Powerful its blade you’ll find.
For it’s living, active power
Will the devil put to flight,
Just as when your Saviour dear
Used it in temptation’s night.
Then, when Sin would overwhelm
Turn your eyes from self to Christ,
See by faith His arms stretched out, bleeding, dying in your place.
Thus, when God upon thee looks,
Sees not filth but righteousness,
Love that suffered on the cross.
Took your sins and called them His.
Now, if self comes back in view,
See it covered in His robe,
His perfection covering you,
Pleading at the Father’s throne.
See self with the Father’s eye,
Viewed through Christ, His perfect Son,
All your sins are washed away,
Filth and guilt and sin – there’s none.
