How Are Our Eyes to be On The Lord?
‘So our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.’
How were their eyes upon the Lord their God?
‘As the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress;’
The psalmist here was watching and waiting for God to appear and help them.
But there’s much more than that here in this picture of a servant and their master.
There’s a moment by moment looking from a servant to see what their master’s will is, what will they have them to do?
Listening, ready to obey.
But how? That would depend on their owner. Servants with a loving master or mistress would cheerfully and willingly obey.
How much more does God love His children? God who is both our Lord and Master and our Heavenly Father.
Loved so much that even ‘while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.’ We were bought with a price, redeemed, by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
‘What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.’
Will we not then spend our days looking up to Him?
Watching, listening, ready and willing to do His will?
Ready to cheerfully and joyfully obey Him? Not to earn anything because there’s nothing to earn! The price has already been paid but out of love.
Let’s dig a little deeper. There Greek word ‘ ʿayin’ translated here as ‘as the eyes’ also means humble and knowledge.
Our eyes should be looking to God with humility, acknowledging that He is our Father and Lord and has authority over us.
Also in that look should be the desire to know. The desire to humbly see, know and do His will.
Is this how we desire to live each moment of every day?
Just as the psalmist did here, we’re quick to look to the Lord in our trouble and rightly so but are our eyes upon the Lord when life is a little easier, when things are going well?
Because these are the times when we’re in the most danger spiritually.
But we need more than desire we need to live out those desires.
How?
By God’s grace through the power of the Holy Spirit who is in us!
It’s living out that abiding place that we have in Jesus Christ.
It’s ‘no more me, just all Christ in me.’
‘Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.’
All we need to truly follow Jesus is freely available to us because ‘his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:’
